Diversity and Accessibility Services
Trillium Health
Centre is committed to improving access to all its facilities,
programs and services for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers
with disabilities. This commitment is demonstrated through
an active Accessibility Advisory Committee which includes
participation from persons with disabilities in the development
and review of its annual accessibility plan, which outlines
past, current and future barrier-removal initiatives and methodologies.
These barrier-removal initiatives centre around five main
barriers identified in the legislation (Accessibility for
Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA 2005), Ontarians with
Disabilities Act (ODA, 2001)), namely:
- Communication
- Policies and Practices
- Attitudinal
- Physical/Architectural
- Technology
To date, Trillium
has completed several projects within each of these identified
barriers to make itself a barrier-free organization for people
with disabilities, including:
- Barrier-free redevelopment planning
- Ongoing development of new signage within the Health Centre
- Educational awareness sessions on various disability and
diversity issues for staff and volunteers
- Ongoing physical upgrades and retrofits to Trillium at
both sites as part of annual infrastructure budget
- Improved accommodations for people with hearing difficulties,
including TTY, audio systems, and alternate formats for
HR recruitment
- Complete written directions for site in regular and large
font
- Hiring of Diversity Services Manager and Consultant
- Enhancement of interpretation/translation services

excitement that we at Trillium embark on the next phase of
accessibility initiatives to reshape and reform access to
health care for individuals with disabilities.
