Accreditation

Accreditation is an external peer review process that uses national standards of excellence to assess the services that health care organizations provide to their patients.

In June of 2010, as a result of Trillium’s survey by Accreditation Canada, Trillium was awarded a three-year Full Accreditation without Conditions, and was recognized for six ‘leading practices’ – practices which Accreditation Canada found to be examples of high quality leadership and service delivery.

“Congratulations on your organization’s leadership, staff commitment, and organization-wide quest for improvement!” wrote Suzanne Larocque, chair, Accreditation Decision Committee in her letter accompanying the report of the May 16-21 survey. “You are demonstrating a commitment to providing quality care and service.”

The Accreditation Canada surveyors echoed those sentiments in their commentary: "Trillium Health Centre can celebrate many successes. This is an excellent organization that is committed to patient safety and to a culture of safety throughout. It has dedicated resources to making the environment safe and appropriate. The quality framework and patient safety improvements are exceptional at Trillium and should be used as an example for other organizations."

The six leading practices for which Accreditation Canada commended Trillium as being exemplary organizational practices that demonstrate high quality leadership and service delivery are:

  1. Transfer of Accountability (safe patient hand off at nursing shift change at bedside)
  2. Patient Education in Birthing Suite (Baby and You educational videos for new moms)
  3. Code STEMI/PPCI
  4. Order Sets (standardized orders sets / clinical protocols)
  5. Managing Alternate Level of Care (ALC) in partnership with the CCAC and LHIN
  6. Continuum of Spine Care (from assessment through treatment and rehabilitation)

From the Accreditation Canada’s Surveyor’s Commentary for Trillium Health Centre:

“Trillium Health Centre can celebrate many successes. This is an excellent organization that is
committed to patient safety and to a culture of safety throughout. It has dedicated resources to making the environment safe and appropriate.

“There is a clear mission, vision and values statement and the organization has done an excellent job of publicizing its roles and responsibilities within the community and the health care system. The quality framework and patient safety improvements are exceptional at Trillium Health Centre (THC) and should be used as an example for other organizations. The process used for planning and design changes is inclusive and has produced an excellent prototype inpatient wing in the West J wing of the organization.

“Staff engagement is a definite strength and the organization has worked hard at developing positive staff working relationships. The stated and evidenced commitment to seniors and seniors’ services is another strength at THC. A number of patients identified that they lived outside the jurisdiction of THC and had a community hospital in their own neighbourhood but that they sought care at THC because of its reputation and commitment to patient safety. Staff engagement is a definite success and the ability to keep staff interested and satisfied shows in the retention strategies and the low vacancy rates.

“The ability to maintain momentum in the areas of patient safety and the development of a culture of safety are additional leadership successes. The strategic planning that has occurred is impressive. The ability to generate a small surplus in the last two years with minimal funding increase, and no reductions in client services is a noteworthy accomplishment.

“The organization has a demonstrated ability to build and maintain partnerships such as the local health integration networks (LHIN) and neighbouring hospitals. The organization enjoys a good relationship with its community partners and is seen to be inclusive in information sharing and in participation in community initiatives. The organization has an excellent reputation among the community and in its partner circles. In fact the partners summed up the Trillium Health Centre by saying “....it is a large organization with a small town feel. We are made to feel welcome and that we are not a nuisance to them...."
