Trillium Health Centre Winner of the OHA 2008 Patient Safety Award

Trillium Health Centre is the winner of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) 2008 Patient Safety Award for its innovative approach to promoting good hand hygiene.

Trillium’s Infection Prevention and Control team uses blood agar plates to see the amount of bacteria on an employee’s hands both before and after hand sanitizing. Before cleaning their hands, staff are asked to touch the 'before' section of the agar plate with their fingertips. They then use an alcohol-based hand rub and an infection control practitioner walks them through the hand sanitizing steps before they touch the 'after' section on the agar plate. Trillium counts the bacterial colonies before and after cleaning and calculates the reduction by percentage and posts the results on an intranet site.

To preserve anonymity, staff are provided with a number which they can then use to access their results online to compare and understand the effectiveness of their own hand sanitizing techniques.

The OHA chose Trillium's initiative from more than 100 entries Ontario hospitals submitted about projects and programs that improve patient safety.

3M honoured Trillium with a $5,000 prize.
