My Aching Back – Strategies for the Family Practitioner
in the Care of Back Pain

The 5th Annual Spine Symposium, organized by Trillium Health Centre Spine Institute, will focus on most recent information on various topics the family practitioner needs to have in the management of his patients. Topics include efficient assessment, surgical technologies, interpretation of diagnostics, rehabilitation, psychosocial aspects of back pain, how to manage patients with chronic pain, and others. This symposium will also be of interest to nurses, chiropractors and other health professionals dealing with back pain in their patients.

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Edward Abraham is an orthopaedic and spinal surgeon practising in the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation in St. John, New Brunswick.  He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Residency Teaching Program, and a past-president of the Canadian Spine Society.  Dr. Abraham will be presenting on the most updated technologies in spinal surgery and on the alternatives to conventional management of back pain which the family doctor faces today.  He has presented at numerous conferences and workshops, is involved in research and has published a number of articles.

Invited Faculty:

Dr. Stephen Lewis is an orthopaedic surgeon in both the University Health Network and Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  He is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto.  Dr. Lewis has been published in a number of journals and has traveled across North America for lecture presentations and conference participation.  He has been recognized as a distinguished teacher of undergraduates and residents, having received a number of awards. 

Dr. Stuart McGill is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo.  He has focused his research in the Spine Biomechanics Laboratory to better understand how the low back functions and becomes injured in order to prevent injury and provide optimal rehabilitation.  His work as been recognized with many awards.  He currently serves on the editorial board for the journals Clinical Biomechanics, Applied Biomechanics and Spine.  He has published both books and numerous articles.

Dr. Angela Cheung  is the Director of UHN Osteoporosis Program, Associate Director of UHN Women’s Health Program and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto.  Having received her medical degree from John Hopkins University and  Ph.D. degree from Harvard University, she has continued to specialize in osteoporosis and postmenopausal Women’s health.  She has received many honors and awards throughout her medical career for her excellence in clinical work, research and education.  She currently holds an Ontario Ministry of Health Services Research Career Award.

Dr. Martin Katzman is a psychiatrist and Assistant Professor with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.  He is the Clinic Director at the START Clinic (Stress, Trauma, Anxiety Rehabilitation and Treatment) for Mood and Anxiety Disorders, as well as  a staff psychiatrist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health – Clarke Division.  His clinical interest is in the diagnosis and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, providing expert consultation work in the pharmacotherapeutic management of these disorders, as well as cognitive behavioural therapy in both group and individual formats.  Dr, Katzman is the Co-Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the ADAC/ACTA.
