The Surgical Safety Checklist – improving patient safety at Trillium Health Centre
At Trillium Health Centre, we are constantly striving to deliver the highest standard of quality and safe care. The Surgical Safety Checklist (SSCL) is one important tool we use to accomplish this goal.
The SSCL is a communication tool that is used by operating room teams to discuss important details about each surgical case. The SSCL helps ensure that important safety steps are followed for each and every operation.
Trillium operating room teams have been using the SSCL since July, 2009 – a full year ahead of the scheduled compliance set out by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
As part of our philosophy of care, it is important to always involve our patients and those most important to them in their care. To help our patients and their families better understand what the SSCL is, how it’s used by our surgical team and how it affects them, a pamphlet has also been developed and is available for download on the surgical health system section of our website.
