GlaxoSmithKline recognized by Trillium Health Centre for its contribution to the health of our communities
Naming ceremony today for GlaxoSmithKline Chronic Disease Management & Prevention Centre at Trillium-Mississauga

Mississauga-West Toronto (April 13, 2010) - At a recognition ceremony today, Trillium Health Centre thanked GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for its longstanding support of facilities and programs for people living with chronic diseases by naming the GlaxoSmithKline Chronic Disease Management & Prevention Centre.
Patients coming to Trillium for help in managing chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure and hepatitis will learn prevention and coping skills at the GlaxoSmithKline Chronic Disease Management & Prevention Centre’s modern classrooms, exercise spaces, fully-equipped demonstration kitchen, and private consultation rooms.
“People in the communities we serve in Peel, Halton and West Toronto need our help to manage chronic diseases. These are people struggling for every breath because of COPD. They are people struggling to avoid losing ground and, indeed, their lives to diabetes. And they are children and adults struggling with the burden of asthma ” said Trillium President and CEO, Janet Davidson, O.C. “Thanks to our partnership with GSK, these patients will have new skills, new goals and new hope.”
GlaxoSmithKline donated $1 million to Trillium Health Centre in 2002 towards the development and implementation of asthma education. As the number of people needing help managing asthma and other prevalent, chronic diseases has grown over the years, so has GSK’s commitment to supporting Trillium’s chronic disease management (CDM) patient education projects.
“GSK is not only committed to providing Canadians with medications for their chronic disease, but also to partnering with organizations like Trillium to provide benefit in ways that medicines alone cannot,” said Paul Lucas, president and CEO of GlaxoSmithKline Inc. “GSK is proud to be part of this project. We look forward to working together to provide the best care in this country for those suffering from chronic illness.”
Chronic diseases such as diabetes are persistent and tend to develop with age. With tobacco use, physical inactivity and poor eating habits being major contributors, managing chronic disease requires a ‘lifestyle’ approach.
The PRIISME project, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, introduced Trillium to an early chronic disease management structure which brought together multiple programs.
Its involvement in PRIISME helped Trillium identify service gaps and develop creative tools and resources to help patients and healthcare providers fill these gaps.
Trillium’s Diabetes Management Centre, Asthma Program, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Heart Function clinics have worked together to create practical toolkits for the community. These tools have been used, region wide and in some cases across the province, to help patients receive consistent messaging about their conditions, and as dependable and easy to use resources for health care providers.
