Trillium Gala honours Mayor Hazel McCallion and issues Cardiac Challenge to the community

Trillium Health Centre honoured Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion tonight at its 2008 Gala by announcing it will name its advanced cardiac care centre the “Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health” in recognition of the Mayor’s support for and contributions to Trillium, the City of Mississauga and the citizens of Ontario during her 30 years as Mayor.

“We are extremely grateful for everything Mayor McCallion has done for Trillium Health Centre and for the health and well-being of the people of Mississauga,” said Janet Davidson, O.C. president and CEO. “As a regional cardiac centre, we are confident that the Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health will help our Mayor realize her vision of Mississauga ‘as a city of people with optimal, physical, mental and spiritual health.’ ”

Mayor McCallion was the honorary chair of Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s $36 million capital campaign - the proceeds of which are making a significant contribution to the $100-million redevelopment and expansion projects currently underway at Trillium.

“The Mayor has always been there for us,” said D. Scott Campbell, chair of Trillium Health Centre’s Board of Directors. “Her immense contribution will be recognized in the good work being done to promote healthy lifestyles at the Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health.”

“The Trillium Health Centre is a jewel in Mississauga’s crown. Known for the high quality of health care it provides and its dedicated and compassionate staff, the residents of Mississauga and the surrounding area are well served by this outstanding health facility,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. “The Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health will provide cardiac care, research and education which will help to enhance Trillium’s reputation as a leader in cardiac care and I am truly honoured to have this facility bear my name.”

“An Evening Voyage” in support of Trillium’s Cardiac Challenge, Gala 2008 was hosted by co-chairs Lena Demarco, regional director, community affairs, Bell Canada and Dr. Thomas Rebane, chief of cardiology, Trillium Health Centre. Over 700 of Mississauga and Toronto's business, medical and community leaders, local MPPs and other VIPs attended and helped celebrate Mayor McCallion’s recognition.

The gala is expected to raise $435,000 net to support the redevelopment of Cardiac Catheterization Labs.

The goal of Trillium’s Cardiac Challenge is to raise $15 million in 15 months to support cardiac care at Trillium - from prevention and diagnosis to treatment, research and education.
