COMMUNITY LEADER
HAROLD G. SHIPP PLEDGES $6-MILLION
FOR TRILLIUM HEALTH CENTRE
- Landmark Gift For Stroke Centre Accompanied by Matching
Challenge to Community -
TORONTO AND MISSISSAUGA
(April 28, 2005) – Trillium Health Centre, one of Canada’s
leading community hospitals, today announced a $6-million
pledge from Harold G. Shipp, a leading Toronto businessman,
philanthropist and longtime Trillium supporter. Mr. Shipp,
whose involvement with Trillium Health Centre spans nearly
35 years, will match every dollar raised by the community
up to a total of $6-million.
When the matching
challenge is completed, Mr. Shipp’s contribution will
represent the largest charitable gift received by the health
centre. The challenge is offered until April 15, 2006 with
final results to be announced at Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s
Gala 2006.
Received during a morning ceremony
at Trillium’s Mississauga site, the pledge is designated
for Trillium’s multimillion dollar expansion campaign,
which includes the Stroke Centre, to be named for Mr. Shipp
and his late wife June.
Mr. Shipp is a captain
of industry and community with ties to Mississauga dating
back to 1953. He and his father Gordon attended the groundbreaking
ceremonies of Trillium’s two sites in Mississauga and
Etobicoke. His son Gordon, and all 10 of his grandchildren
were born at Trillium’s Queensway Site in Etobicoke,
and his father, mother, stepmother and wife June died at Trillium’s
Mississauga site. Mr. Shipp’s contribution means Trillium
will surpass its fundraising target of $30-million, helping
ensure its place as a leader in quality, patient-centred health
care.
“In 1990, June and I committed
to providing for the health centre’s needs in our wills,”
said Mr. Shipp. “But I’ve decided that it is more
important to make this donation now for the immediate benefit
of our community. I know June would be thrilled to see our
family’s commitment being made now, and I encourage
members of our community to do the same, so that each dollar
they donate will be doubled.”
Mr. Shipp is Honorary Chairman of
the Foundation, and the Trillium’s $30 Million Fundraising
Campaign. He is also a founding Director of the Friends of
the Mississauga Hospital Foundation, and past Chairman of
the Building Committee for the Queensway General Hospital
from the early 1970s to mid-1990s, as well as Vice Chair of
the Hospital Board. Mr. Shipp is Chairman and CEO of Shipp
Corporation, one of the GTA’s most prominent private
development companies.
Gay Mitchell, Campaign Chair and RBC
Financial Group’s Regional President for Ontario accepted
the donation on behalf of Trillium Health Centre.
“Harold’s challenge gift
will serve as a lasting tribute to his late wife and it will
inspire others to support Trillium Health Centre,” said
Ms. Mitchell. “Harold has shown tremendous confidence
in, and passion for Trillium for many years. Now we have an
incredible opportunity for our community to show this same
confidence and passion, and have their donations matched,
dollar for dollar.”
