CANPAR PRESIDENT AND CEO JOHN CYOPECK FIRST TO ANSWER MULTIMILLION DOLLAR SHIPP-TRILLIUM FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE
- Surprises Trillium Fundraising Gala with $1-Million Commitment -

TORONTO AND MISSISSAUGA (April 30, 2005) – Trillium Health Centre, one of Canada’s leading community hospitals, yesterday accepted a surprise $1-million commitment from John Cyopeck, President and CEO of Canpar Transport LP and recent Trillium patient. The commitment – which includes a $100,000 personal donation and commitment to raise an additional $900,000 by the end of August – was received at Trillium Health Centre’s annual fundraising gala at the Mississauga Convention Centre.

Mr. Cyopeck’s pledge is the first response to Harold Shipp’s multimillion dollar challenge to match his $6-million contribution dollar for dollar. When achieved, the combined $12-million in donations will be the largest ever received by the health centre.

Diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in February, for which he received initial treatment at Trillium, Mr. Cyopeck is an ardent supporter of the health centre. He attests to the high quality of care it has provided to himself and his wife, daughter and step-daughter. Mr. Cyopeck’s $1-million pledge is targeted to support the construction of new facilities to house the hospital’s new MRI unit.

”I feel compelled to give back to Trillium, and to assist those who, like me, are directly affected by stressful and life-threatening delays in receiving lifesaving MRI treatments,” said Mr. Cyopeck. “Our hospital is the centre of this community and it is vital that we provide its doctors and staff with the best tools possible to do their job. I am pleased to do my part and ask each and every one of you to join me in giving what you can. No amount is too small.”

Gay Mitchell, RBC Financial Group’s Regional President for Ontario and Campaign Chair accepted the donation on behalf of Trillium Health Centre.

“John Cyopeck’s gesture is fantastic news for Trillium and the community,” said Ms. Mitchell. “His contribution, along with those of our neighbours and friends, will help to drive us past our fundraising goal.”
