Helping patients and families stay connected with Trillium Health Centre’s new wireless Internet service

Patients and guests of Trillium Health Centre’s Mississauga and West Toronto locations now have access to wireless high speed Internet to help them stay connected online while they are at Trillium.

Want to share photos or video clips of your new baby from your hospital bed? Now you can. Wondering what to give to a friend who is in the hospital? Why not buy them a day of Internet access instead of flowers or a card?

Trillium’s wireless network allows patients and guests to use their own wireless-equipped laptop computers to surf the web, check e-mail, send photos of their new baby, continue their work or studies, and stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues.

Transforming the patient experience through technology

A short stay in the hospital can be frightening and a bit boring at the same time. Patients who require a long-term stay can feel out of touch. Even though patients have daily activities like physiotherapy and time with friends and family, there are many hours to be filled during their recovery from illness or injury.

Now, with access to the Internet, Trillium patients can look up health information in several languages on Trillium’s Health Information & Wellness Centre webpage, visit their favourite sites to play online games, listen to music or radio programs, and keep up with their hobbies.

“We got feedback from many people that we could improve the patient experience by offering Internet access while they are in hospital or visiting Trillium patients,” said Benoît Long, chief information officer and chief marketing officer at Trillium. “The service is easy to use from a patient’s perspective - and we've had several family members and friends use it too - so they can keep connected to their families or businesses while they are here caring for their loved ones”

The new Wireless Internet Service is available at Trillium Health Centre’s Mississauga and West Toronto locations.

Patients are already enjoying the system and visitors who are not sure what to give to a friend in the hospital may want to consider a gift of time by paying for access to the Internet. Trillium offers four options, payable with Visa, MasterCard or American Express through online payment: 24 Hours - $6.95; 3 Days - $15.95; 7 Days - $25.95 and 1 Month - $44.95.

To access the wireless network, you’ll need a laptop computer or device equipped with an Internet browser and a wireless network card. For more information, download the ‘Patient and Guest Wireless Internet Service’ brochure from Trillium’s website at www.trilliumhealthcentre.org under Patient & Visitor Information.
