Trillium Health Centre mourns the loss of Jim Brayley, M.D.
Mississauga/West Toronto – James Lionel Brayley, M.D. F.R.C.S. (C), an obstetrician and gynaecologist who practiced for more than 50 years at Trillium Health Centre and its predecessors, The Mississauga Hospital and Queensway General Hospital, died Saturday, December 5, 2009. He was 82 years of age.
“Jim Brayley was an icon,” says Janet Davidson, O.C. Trillium’s president and CEO. “He delivered the first baby born at South Peel Hospital – later renamed The Mississauga Hospital – in 1958. When he retired in 2007, we knew we were losing not only his medical expertise but a living history of health care in Mississauga and West Toronto, as well as Trillium itself.”
Dr. Jim Brayley practiced at Queensway General Hospital in 1956, then, in 1958, joined South Peel Hospital where his father, Dr. Lionel G. Brayley was Chief of Medical Staff.
He was instrumental in organizing and developing the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, serving as its first director until 1971.
In a letter of appreciation for his service, Scott Campbell, then chair of the Board of Directors, wrote, “It is very rare to see someone have an affiliation with an organization for over 50 years. This speaks well of the loyalty and dedication of the individual as well as the quality of the organization.”
Born in 1927 in Port Credit, he studied medicine at the University of Toronto. He was licensed to practice medicine in 1951 and was certified in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1956. Dr. Brayley is survived by his wife Margaret, his children David, Allan, Anne and Martha and grandchildren Daniel and Adam.
Earlier this year, Dr. Brayley was interviewed by Trillium staff about his life and career. He expressed great pride in an institution he and his father did so much to build. “It’s a great place this Trillium Health Centre and if my dad could see it, I’m sure he’d be cheering and clapping to see what he helped get started morph into a grand world class medical institution,” he said. “So much has happened since I started – we were 100 to 125 beds and (now) we have an institution that can do everything. If people are talking about going to the Mayo Clinic, I say, ‘why go there, we can do everything at Trillium they can do there.’ ”
The family will receive friends and colleagues on Friday, December 11 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Skinner and Middlebrook Funeral Home, 128 Lakeshore Road East, in Port Credit.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Trillium Health Centre – Mississauga, New Wing Auditorium, 100 Queensway West, Mississauga.
