Trillium Health Centre shows improvement in patient safety
CIHI releases HSMR data
Mississauga/West Toronto - Trillium Health Centre showed improvement in Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) reports issued today by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).
HSMR measures the ratio of actual to expected deaths in acute care hospitals by comparing the actual number of deaths in a hospital or health region with the overall Canadian experience - after adjusting for various factors that affect in-hospital mortality, such as the age, gender, transfers, diagnoses and admission status of patients.
Trillium’s HSMR results for all cases dropped to 92 in fiscal 2007-08 which is lower than the expected mortality rate and lower than the previous three years, calculated in comparison to a national average of 100.
This year, CIHI included palliative cases in the calculations and recalculated the previous three years’ data, which shifted the results slightly upward from those reported last year.
Trillium Health Centre supports the CIHI HSMR study because it is an important high-level statistical measure of patient outcomes used by hospitals in several countries to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
“Trillium is encouraged to have dropped below the national HSMR average in the last fiscal year. Our staff, physicians and volunteers are embracing our patient safety initiatives, which is resulting in improved patient outcomes," said Janet Davidson, O.C. Trillium’s president and CEO. “Health care is a journey, not a destination. You can never be satisfied, because there will always be challenges to meet and room for improvement.”

- Mississauga-Halton LHIN Includes Trillium, Credit Valley Hospital, Halton Healthcare Services (Georgetown, Milton, Oakville-Trafalgar sites), William Osler Health Centre - Georgetown.
- HSMR equal to 100 means there is no difference between a hospital's mortality rate and the overall average experience of patients in Canada
"At Trillium we always look for ways to improve the quality and safety of the care we provide to our patients. We use the CIHI HSMR results to better understand statistical trends in our mortality rates over time," said Patti Cochrane, Trillium's vice president, patient services and quality. ““Evidence-based approaches like HSMR help us evaluate our performance and assess our ongoing patient safety strategies.”
