Completion of Shipp
Challenge Results in Record Donations in Record Time - $12M
for Trillium Health Centre
Mississauga/Toronto: Christmas came
early to Trillium Health Centre with the delivery of a $6
million cheque presented by Harold G. Shipp. Ringing Christmas
bells and sporting a Santa hat, Mr. Shipp pulled the cheque
from an oversized Santa sack and presented it to E. Gay Mitchell,
Executive VP Strategic Business Development, RBC Financial
Group and Chair of Trillium’s $30 Million Fundraising
Campaign.
The funds had been pledged in late
April when Mr. Shipp announced he would double all donations
for one year ending on April 15, 2006, up to a total of $6
million – the largest gift from an individual ever promised
to Trillium Health Centre Foundation.
The community responded with such
enthusiasm that the money was raised in only six months and
six days, setting a fundraising record for the Foundation
and resulting in a total gift of $12 million for Trillium
Health Centre.
In recognition of this gift, Trillium’s
Stroke Centre will be named “The Harold G. and June
C. Shipp Stroke Centre”.
The Health Centre and Foundation presented a gift in return
in the form of a special plaque, recognizing June C. Shipp’s
outstanding contribution to Trillium Health Centre through
her 35 years of volunteer work. In an emotional ceremony,
a plaque was unveiled which will be permanently installed
in Trillium’s Fracture Clinic, where Mrs. Shipp volunteered
for the ten years prior to her passing in 2001.
