Trillium Health Centre Foundation announces the largest
charitable gift in its history - $5 million from the Volunteers
of Trillium
Mississauga, Etobicoke, ON – Trillium Health Centre
Foundation announced today the largest charitable commitment
in its history - $5 million from the Volunteers of Trillium.
It is believed to be the largest single charitable gift of
its kind in Ontario. In recognition of this gift, the emergency
area of the Mississauga campus will be named “Volunteers
of Trillium Emergency Care Centre.”
Joelle Downey, President of the Volunteers of Trillium announced
the gift during the Foundation’s sold-out gala event.
“The Volunteers of Trillium are a dedicated team of
1,200 volunteers who have launched an energetic grassroots
campaign. We are extremely enthusiastic about our contribution.
The Trillium Health Centre already provides one of the best
health care centres in Canada. We are proud and excited to
be part of it.”
In acknowledgement of the commitment, Gay Mitchell, Trillium
Health Centre Foundation Capital Fundraising Campaign Chair
and Executive Vice-President, RBC Royal Bank stated: “To
receive a gift of this magnitude from a volunteer organization
is unprecedented for us. We are proud to name the Emergency
Care Centre in honour of our volunteers. The $5 million will
support a $200 million expansion project already underway
at Trillium and thanks to the Volunteers of Trillium, we are
one step closer in realizing our capital campaign goal of
$30 million.”
In addition to the pledge from the Volunteers of Trillium,
the gala raised over $380,000 with the generous support of
900 guests and many corporate sponsors, including $35,000
Gold Sponsor Thomson Terminals Limited and $15,000 Silver
Sponsors Bell Canada, Mackenzie Financial Limited, Medtronic
of Canada, The Boomerang Group and Foresight Corporate Communications.
Proceeds will be directed towards the purchase of specialized
equipment to provide unprecedented spine care that will benefit
more than 5,700 patients annually.
“The Spine Institute is destined to redefine
how spine care is delivered in Canada,” said Dr. Hart
Schutz, Neurosurgeon at Trillium Health Centre. “The
institute will provide patients and their families with quick
and easy access to all the resources they need under one roof.”
As many as nine out of ten people will develop
pain associated with back problems in their lifetime. The
Spine Institute, to be located at the award-winning ambulatory
care centre at the Hospital’s Queensway Site, will be
a ‘one-stop-shop’ offering traditional and alternative
therapies, including diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and
occupational therapy.
The Trillium Heath Centre (formerly known as the Mississauga
Hospital and Queensway General Hospital) serves over one million
residents. Our specialty services in cardiac care and neurosurgery
attract patients from across the country. It has the largest
Emergency Care Centre in Canada and the largest free-standing
day surgery facility in North America.
