Trillium Health Centre Foundation announces the largest charitable gift in its history - $5 million from the Volunteers of Trillium

Mississauga, Etobicoke, ON – Trillium Health Centre Foundation announced today the largest charitable commitment in its history - $5 million from the Volunteers of Trillium. It is believed to be the largest single charitable gift of its kind in Ontario. In recognition of this gift, the emergency area of the Mississauga campus will be named “Volunteers of Trillium Emergency Care Centre.”

Joelle Downey, President of the Volunteers of Trillium announced the gift during the Foundation’s sold-out gala event. “The Volunteers of Trillium are a dedicated team of 1,200 volunteers who have launched an energetic grassroots campaign. We are extremely enthusiastic about our contribution. The Trillium Health Centre already provides one of the best health care centres in Canada. We are proud and excited to be part of it.”

In acknowledgement of the commitment, Gay Mitchell, Trillium Health Centre Foundation Capital Fundraising Campaign Chair and Executive Vice-President, RBC Royal Bank stated: “To receive a gift of this magnitude from a volunteer organization is unprecedented for us. We are proud to name the Emergency Care Centre in honour of our volunteers. The $5 million will support a $200 million expansion project already underway at Trillium and thanks to the Volunteers of Trillium, we are one step closer in realizing our capital campaign goal of $30 million.”

In addition to the pledge from the Volunteers of Trillium, the gala raised over $380,000 with the generous support of 900 guests and many corporate sponsors, including $35,000 Gold Sponsor Thomson Terminals Limited and $15,000 Silver Sponsors Bell Canada, Mackenzie Financial Limited, Medtronic of Canada, The Boomerang Group and Foresight Corporate Communications. Proceeds will be directed towards the purchase of specialized equipment to provide unprecedented spine care that will benefit more than 5,700 patients annually.

“The Spine Institute is destined to redefine how spine care is delivered in Canada,” said Dr. Hart Schutz, Neurosurgeon at Trillium Health Centre. “The institute will provide patients and their families with quick and easy access to all the resources they need under one roof.”

As many as nine out of ten people will develop pain associated with back problems in their lifetime. The Spine Institute, to be located at the award-winning ambulatory care centre at the Hospital’s Queensway Site, will be a ‘one-stop-shop’ offering traditional and alternative therapies, including diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and occupational therapy.

The Trillium Heath Centre (formerly known as the Mississauga Hospital and Queensway General Hospital) serves over one million residents. Our specialty services in cardiac care and neurosurgery attract patients from across the country. It has the largest Emergency Care Centre in Canada and the largest free-standing day surgery facility in North America.
