Trillium
Health Centre First Hospital Recognized as Environmental Leader
TORONTO
and MISSISSAUGA: Trillium Health Centre was officially recognized
today as an Ontario Environmental Leader by the Honourable
Laurel Broten, Minister of the Environment and MPP Etobicoke-Lakeshore,
at a ceremony held at the hospital’s West Toronto location.
Trillium is the only hospital in Ontario with this distinction.
Trillium was invited to be a member of the Ontario Environmental
Leaders Program in November 2005 and is the first and only
health care facility to be recognized by the program. Through
the program, Trillium has committed to reduce mercury usage
by 98 per cent by April 2006. To date, the hospital has eliminated
100 percent of its mercury usage. Trillium has also committed
to diverting waste by an additional 30 per cent by 2008.
“Trillium Health Centre is honoured to accept this recognition
on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment,” said
Catharine Shipp Wells, Chair of Trillium Health Centre. “We
are dedicated to making great strides in improving the environment
in which we care for our patients. As the only hospital in
this prestigious program, we look forward to helping to make
positive changes that will benefit hospital communities across
the province.”
“The McGuinty government is proud to acknowledge corporations
and facilities in Ontario that are committed to innovation
and to environmental excellence. The efforts Trillium Health
Centre has made go above and beyond ministry regulations.
It is a wonderful example of their dedication to protecting
the environment,” said Environment Minister Laurel Broten.
“We are proving that Ontario is a place where the environment
and good business go hand in hand.”
The Ontario Environmental Leaders Program was developed in
2001 as a component of a plan that would establish Ontario
as an environmental leader. The program offers companies environmental
initiatives and rewards them with public recognition and acknowledgement
through the Ministry of the Environment’s various communication
vehicles. By becoming a member, Trillium has committed to
going beyond what is expected to reduce environmental impacts.
