Trillium launches International Year of Volunteers+10 with “Wear Your Heart” event
Mayor Hazel McCallion helps Trillium Health Centre celebrate its Volunteers on her 90th birthday

Mississauga/West Toronto – Trillium Health Centre celebrated Valentine’s Day by kicking off International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10) festivities with the Wear Your Heart event. The event recognized the volunteer contributions of Trillium staff and physicians, as well as the work of Trillium’s own volunteers.
Helping to honour the volunteers was a great supporter of volunteerism and Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, who was also celebrating her 90th birthday.
Trillium’s President and CEO Janet Davidson presented two volunteers, two staff members and a physician with Wear Your Heart pins in recognition of their volunteer contributions.
“It’s important that we recognize volunteers and the tremendous impact they have on our community,” said Janet Davidson, O.C., president and CEO. “At Trillium we see first hand the difference a volunteer can have in a patient’s hospital experience.”
“Trillium is a volunteer-centred organization,” continues Davidson. “We benefit from the support of volunteers and we are supportive of our staff and physicians who volunteer. I am so proud to say that so many of our staff volunteer locally, nationally and internationally.”
“We see it in the work of the 1,100 volunteers who help care for our patients, help family members and assist with administrative tasks. Their work makes a positive difference in the lives of our patients, their families and our community, every day,” said Davidson.
Volunteers support over 100 programs and services across Trillium’s two locations. Volunteers help patients and visitors find their way and their loved ones; help make patients’ hospital stays more comfortable; act as patient liaisons in our Emergency Centre and Urgent Care Centre and provide administrative support. Volunteers contribute directly or indirectly to the well-being of those in the care of Trillium.
“Most people find they get back so much more than they give when they volunteer. I have definitely found this to be true in my own volunteer experience,” said Davidson. “When you invest in your community, you make an investment in yourself.”
The Wear Your Heart Pin is designed for everyone who wishes to recognize a colleague, friend or family member for their volunteer efforts.
Following the formal event and her birthday celebration, Mayor McCallion toured the day surgery unit where she met the on-duty volunteers and presented them with their IYV+10 Wear Your Heart pins.
Trillium Health Centre’s vibrant and dynamic team of 1,100 volunteers are our partners in the delivery of patient-centred care, supporting more than 100 programs and services across our two locations and in the community.
