Trillium Health Centre Foundation rings in 2009 with more than $1 million in donations

“I Heart Hazel” campaign inspires community to give from the heart for local cardiac care

The new year is off to a heart-warming start for Trillium Health Centre and its “I Heart Hazel” campaign in support of the Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health.  Four generous members of the Mississauga and West Toronto community have shown their “heart” for Mayor Hazel McCallion with combined donations exceeding $1 million.

The “I Heart Hazel” campaign challenges the community to demonstrate their love, appreciation and respect for Mayor McCallion – in other words, to show the Mayor some heart – by making a donation to the Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health in her honour.

“We challenged the community to support advanced cardiac care close to home in honour of Mayor McCallion – someone who has been at the heart of the community for three decades,” says Steve Hoscheit, president and CEO, Trillium Health Centre Foundation.  “We are very grateful for all the donations this campaign has inspired, and these generous gifts are certainly no exception.”

The donations, that have given the “I Heart Hazel” campaign a $1 million start to 2009, come from donors as diverse as the Mississauga and West Toronto community itself.

Mattamy Homes, Canada’s largest new home builder, has donated $250,000 under the leadership of Peter Gilgan, a long-time Trillium Health Centre supporter and heart health enthusiast.  Gordon and Ruth Gooder, residents of Etobicoke who believe strongly in the quality of care Trillium provides seniors, have donated $500,000.  David Wilkes, one of Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s board members, has donated $70,000.  And finally, an anonymous donor who wanted to honour the Mayor and support cardiac care has donated $200,000.

“We’re thrilled that our donation will make a real difference to so many people,” says Peter Gilgan, chief executive officer, Mattamy Corporation.  “Given that heart disease is the number one health problem in this country, having the best possible doctors and using the latest technologies within minutes of home or work is important.”

Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s goal is to raise $15 million for the Hazel McCallion Centre for Heart Health, using the funds to upgrade essential medical equipment, build a more robust technological infrastructure, and initiate new programs and research to improve patient treatments.  To date, $11 million of the $15 million goal has been raised.

“These donations, along with the numerous $88, $888 and even $8 donations that Trillium Health Centre Foundation is receiving from the public in honour of Mayor McCallion’s upcoming 88th birthday on Valentine’s Day, will stay in the community from which they came,” adds Hoscheit.

The “I Heart Hazel” campaign features a dedicated website, www.ihearthazel.com, where visitors can make their donation and learn more about the campaign.  Donations can also be arranged by contacting Trillium Health Centre Foundation at 905.848.7575.
