Compelling community artwork reflects the “Mozaik of Life”at Trillium Health Centre
Large-scale photographic mural honours the health centre’s staff, volunteers and community supporters
Mississauga/West Toronto – Trillium Health Centre unveiled a captivating new community photographic art mural, the ”Mozaik of Life” project, today at its West Toronto location to the delight of community supporters, volunteers and staff.
“This amazing work of art – the Mozaik of Life – is a tribute to our strong and committed Trillium family,” said Janet Davidson, O.C., president & CEO of Trillium Health Centre. “It is a snapshot, literally, of the outstanding people who make our organization what it is, and of the diverse community of which Trillium is such an integral part.”
The Mozaik of Life is a 12 x 65 foot (3.6 by 19.8 metres) mural that honours the people who contribute to the success of Trillium Health Centre.
From a distance, it looks like large images of three individuals. In reality, the mural consists of 79,200 smaller images, or “pixels.” Over 200 individuals representing staff, physicians, volunteers, supporters, donors, politicians and members of the business and media communities were draped in coloured fabrics and photographed last June by artists from the Human MOZAÏK group. Photos of those 200-plus subjects are used as “pixels” to create three larger images.
“It was very exciting for us to unveil the Mozaik of Life to our Trillium family, as this one-of-a-kind mural has been years in the making,” says Steve Hoscheit, president & CEO, Trillium Health Centre Foundation. “The project was made possible through the support of the Volunteers of Trillium Health Centre, and we’re very grateful for their generosity.”
The Mozaik of Life not only celebrates the people who contribute to the work done at Trillium Health Centre, but it also adds to the healing spaces at the hospital by providing a permanent, colourful and celebratory art installation for The Trillium Way at our West Toronto location.
“Evidence shows that the displaying of artwork, along with other creative design elements like natural light, help create a welcoming, healing environment in health care facilities,” said Davidson. “The Mozaik of Life is a wonderful way to welcome people to Trillium-West Toronto – we believe people from all walks of life will find themselves reflected in it.”
Faces featured in Trillium’s Mozaik of Life
Three individual photos were chosen to be featured as the large-scale images, appearing in the Mozaik of Life from left to right: Anil Shah, a long-time Trillium supporter and board member; Ann Mackay, a dedicated community member who has been a volunteer at Trillium for over 56 years; and Dr. Joo-Meng Soh, a talented physician and Trillium’s former Chief of Medicine.
Human MOZAÏK
The Mozaik of Life was created by Human MOZAÏK, an Ottawa/Gatineau-based artistic group specializing in photographic murals using hundreds of small photos put together to create a final, large-scale piece of urban art.
“The Mozaik of Life at Trillium is the largest mural we have ever created - three times larger than our previous pieces,” says Jean René, the art director, artist and founder of The Human MOZAÏK. “Public art has the power to transform our daily experiences. It has the ability to turn public spaces into more human and social spaces.”
Other Human MOZAÏK projects include murals at Alberta Children's Hospital, Canadian Museum of Civilization and Maison de La Culture in Gatineau, and the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. For more information, go to www.artmozaik.com.
