New report confirms: Trillium excels in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

Mississauga/West Toronto: On July 7, the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), in collaboration with the Cardiac Care Network of Ontario, released a Report on Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Surgery in Ontario, fiscal years 2005/06 and 2006/07. The overall outcomes for the 11 cardiac centres in Ontario are excellent, according to the report’s investigators, with mortality rates associated with CABG surgery continuing to decline.

Trillium Health Centre was the only hospital to perform at or better than the provincial average in every category in each of the two reporting years. For example, compared with the provincial in-hospital mortality rate of 1.2 per cent in 2006/07, Trillium’s risk-adjusted rate was 0.72 per cent.

“Trillium’s results are outstanding,” said Janet Davidson, O.C., president and CEO of Trillium Health Centre. “The report confirms that Trillium is not only an industry leader in coronary artery bypass surgery but also that Trillium is a provider of world-class, quality care.”

“We are totally committed to the cardiovascular health of the citizens of Peel, Halton and West Toronto,” said Dr. Charles Cutrara, chief of cardiac surgery. “We strive for improved results for every patient who comes through our door.”

“These results confirm our efforts and speak specifically to the quality of the team and the program,” said Cutrara. “We have excellent people at every level using the best possible techniques. From the anaesthetists and the operating room staff, to the cardiac surgery intensive care unit (CSICU) and post-operative care teams – they are all top notch."

"The results reinforce our confidence in the link between our leading-edge beating heart surgery techniques to shorter lengths of stay in the CSICU and the hospital, as well as lower transfusion rates," added Cutrara.  "Our dedicated order sets minimize omissions and miscommunications and are critical to avoiding post-operative complications.”

Cutrara notes that the trending of Trillium’s low mortality rates is all the more significant given the demographic shift in our community. Patients coming to Trillium are now older and sicker, and frequently have other conditions that complicate their health. In the recent past, these patients would not necessarily have been candidates for bypass surgery. However, with the improvement in techniques and care, it has been proven that many of these patients have good results, with an increased quality of life and health. This means they require less hospital resources after the surgery.

“There are still opportunities for further progress,” said Cutrara. “We can work toward dropping our blood transfusion rate even lower, for example, and we can improve the care of those who are in the earlier stages of heart attack by introducing early cardiac intervention. Our ability to provide angioplasty 24/7, led by cardiologist Dr. Randy Watson, does just that. All aspects of cardiovascular care prior to surgery lead to greater stabilization of patients, which produces better outcomes. We will continue to seek opportunities to ensure we are providing the best care for our patients.”
