TRILLIUM HEALTH
CENTRE AND TOSHIBA MEDICAL SYSTEMS
CELEBRATE PARTNERSHIP AND $500,000 CARDIAC RESEARCH STUDY
Toronto & Mississauga, ON, July 25, 2005: Trillium Health
Centre – a leader in health care innovation –
in partnership with Toshiba Medical Systems, is transforming
the health care experience for cardiac and neurology patients.
“We are proud of our long term
relationship with Toshiba,” says Ken White, CEO of Trillium
Health Centre. “This successful venture has brought
significant improvements in the care provided to patients
and the tools needed by our staff and physicians to make a
difference in the lives of our patients, their families and
our community. The future of medicine is ambulatory care and
non-invasive procedures, and will be supported by private
and public partnerships.”
“Our mutually beneficial relationship
will continue to assist both organizations in providing the
most advanced diagnostic and medical services to improve the
overall practice of cardiovascular and neurological medicine,”
says Behram Engineer, vice-president and general manager,
Medical Systems Group, Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Toshiba
of Canada Limited.
Today’s celebration is focused
on the following key announcements:
Beating
Heart and Cardiac CT Study
Toshiba has made a $500,000 commitment toward the world's
first scientific comparison of beating heart and conventional
bypass surgery using cardiac computed tomography (CT). “This
research will make a significant contribution to cardiovascular
science and practice worldwide,” says Dr. Tarang Sheth,
Cardiovascular Radiologist, Trillium Health Centre, and Co-Principal
Investigator on the study.
“This research study is possible
because of Toshiba’s 64 Slice Multi Detector CT and
the company’s financial support,” says Dr. Gopal
Bhatnagar, chief of cardiac surgery, Trillium Health Centre
and Co-Principal Investigator on the study. “Beating
heart surgery has the potential to reduce complications and
mortality and improve long-term survival rates. This study
will help us demonstrate these outcomes.”
In the Fall of 2005, Trillium Health
Centre will begin an 18-month study during which 250 bypass
patients, 125 on-pump and 125 off-pump, will undergo CT scans
to check for graft patency following their surgeries.
Toshiba
64 Slice Multi Detector CT
“With the Toshiba 64 Slice Multi Detector CT, Trillium
Health Centre can now offer cardiac CT with exceptional image
quality and optimal patient comfort,” says Dr. Sheth.
“With this scanner we are crossing into a new era in
the non-invasive diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.”
Toshiba
Neuro Bi-Plane Endovascular Unit
As part of the newly opened Ploder Endovascular Suite, the
Toshiba Neuro Bi-Plane is a diagnostic and interventional
tool used to treat aneurysms, tumors, strokes and blood vessel
malformations of the brain and spine. The Bi-Plane is faster,
more accurate and safer than previous technology.
“Time is of the essence in disorders
of the brain,” says Dr. Dominic Rosso, neuro endovascular
specialist at Trillium Health Centre. “Any delay in
treatment can lead to serious handicaps or even death. The
Neuro Bi-Plane allows us to treat serious malformations in
a minimally invasive method, getting patients back on their
feet faster than previous.”
The Neuro Bi-Plane Endovascular Unit
is the first one in Peel Region and only the 6th in Ontario.
Trillium Health Centre is the only non-teaching hospital in
Canada to have this unit on site.
