Trillium Health Centre’s Spine Institute receives 3M HealthCare Quality Team Award
Innovative approach to spine care continuum recognized at National Healthcare Leadership Conference in St. John's
Trillium Health Centre’s Spine Institute was awarded the 3M HealthCare “Health Care Quality Team Award” yesterday at an awards ceremony in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
“As a neurosurgeon, I have witnessed spine care in Canada to be traditionally fragmented, uncoordinated and fraught with delays,” said Dr. Hart Schutz, who was part of the team that researched and conceptualized the idea of one-stop shopping for spinal care. “The unique aspect of Trillium’s Spine Institute is that it is a primary care model, with an interdisciplinary approach that offers clinical excellence across the whole continuum of care.”
Trillium Health Centre, Canada’s leader in spine surgery volumes, is a primary destination for patients in Ontario suffering from acute disorders related to the spine. With an approach based on early diagnosis and timely access to specialized tests, treatments and appropriate health care professionals, Trillium’s Spine Institute includes:
- Trillium Kingsway Financial Spine Centre
- Diagnostic services
- Interdisciplinary pre-operative education
- Dedicated surgical teams
- 14-bed surgical spine unit
- Education activities
- Research facilities
The Spine Institute’s success is based on the idea of a comprehensive continuum of care. Liaising with experts across the hospital, and across the country, Trillium has succeeded in improving efficiency of spine treatment, reducing waiting lists, contributing to clinical outcomes research in spine care, and achieving national and international recognition as a Centre of Excellence in spine care.
The Spine Institute’s patient satisfaction results show 96 per cent of patients rate quality of care as very good to excellent. Centralized booking and triage of patients takes place for surgical consult, medical spine consult, rehabilitation therapy and psychology appointments. Supported by better access to diagnostic services, dedicated MRI time slots reduce wait times for initial assessment.
“One of the keys to the Spine Institute’s success is the leadership commitment to its compelling vision encompassing the continuum of care,” said Janet Davidson, O.C, president and CEO of Trillium Health Centre. “We have leveraged and aligned existing infrastructure, resources and programs to create a seamless delivery of services for our spine patients.”
In 2008/09, for the second consecutive year, Trillium Health Centre was #1 in spine surgery volumes in Canada with 1,099 surgical cases. The Spine Institute, which is the first ambulatory spine centre with interdisciplinary care and specialists all under one roof, saw 2500 clients last year.
The award ceremony took place at the National Health Care Leadership Conference. For more information, go to http://www.healthcareleadershipconference.ca.
