Take care of yourself - local women urged to access breast cancer screening services

Health Talk at Trillium Health Centre reinforces the importance of early detection

WEST TORONTO, ON –Women from across the community heard compelling evidence for increasing access to and awareness of breast screening. Trillium Health Centre, in collaboration with MPP Laurel Broten for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, hosted a community health talk on June 22.  The breakfast session, entitled Take care of yourself – Importance of breast screening, took place at Trillium – West Toronto.

“Too many of our mothers, sisters and daughters have been affected by breast cancer,” said Laurel Broten, MPP Etobicoke-Lakeshore. “Women who want to be proactive about their own health should have access to the highest quality mammograms and screening available in the province. We are proud these services are available to women close to home, right here in south Etobicoke and Mississauga.”

Trillium’s Betty Wallace Women’s Health Centre is an Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) certified affiliate site. This welcoming, spa-like centre is dedicated to screening and early intervention of breast cancer and osteoporosis. Women in Mississauga and West Toronto communities can access a wide range of integrated services provided by a team of surgeons, nurses, radiologists and technologists dedicated to the caring for women with potential breast disease and osteoporosis in a secure, comfortable environment.

“Trillium’s clinical experts in breast health issued a clear message about the importance of regular breast screening,” said Janet Davidson, O.C., president and CEO of Trillium Health Centre. “Women from across our community have access to screening for early detection of breast cancer and other breast health services right here at Trillium – West Toronto, and we urge them to access it.”

Services offered at Betty Wallace Women’s Health Centre include digital mammography, breast ultrasound, surgical consultations and bone density testing. The digital mammography machines allow Trillium to seamlessly track thousands of digital images and create a greater capacity for the hospital to handle a larger volume of patients in need of high-end, x-ray diagnostics. This results in more accurate scans, shorter wait times and less exposure to radiation for Trillium’s patients. The machines also improve patient comfort, reduce procedure time by about 30 per cent and yield more detailed imaging allowing for better diagnosis.

"You are the most important advocate for your breast health" said Dr. Marianna Kapala, a Trillium Health Centre general surgeon. "We urge all women to be proactive in learning about breast health, asking questions about symptoms or breast changes that concern you and the screening program to identify cancer early."
