Bell Canada keeps
kids connected at Trillium Health Centre
Mississauga/West
Toronto – Thanks to a generous leadership donation from
Bell Canada, sick children at Trillium Health Centre's Paediatric
Inpatient Unit now have an exciting new way to stay connected
with friends and family while enjoying the latest in entertainment
at their bedside.
Bell Canada’s $100,000 gift has funded the purchase
of laptops for every bed in Trillium’s paediatric inpatient
unit, so that children who have to stay in hospital will have
access to computers and wireless internet, powered by Bell
Sympatico.
“Staying in the hospital is especially challenging for
children,” says Jane Gildner, Systems Manager, Children's
Health, Trillium Health Centre. “Not only are they not
feeling well, they are cut off from their social network,
don’t have access to the entertainment options they
are used to at home, and are generally feeling bored. This
unique installation made possible by Bell Canada’s gift
will make a tremendous difference to the experience of children
while in hospital.
Parents also benefit by having the ability to remain in touch
with their workplace while staying with their hospitalized
child.”
Sympatico High Speed Internet Service has also provided free
access to their GamesMania and kidsmania entertainment portals.
Popular with gaming enthusiasts, these sites offer over 360
versions of the latest gaming titles available. Children from
ages 3 to 12 will have fun learning while they play on kidsmania
with the best children's software from Scholastic. GamesMania
offers safe and secure games geared to both the advanced player
and the whole family. A new library of DVD’s will also
be available to children at their bedside to watch on their
laptops provided through Bell’s gift.
"Bell is delighted to partner with Trillium Health Centre
in helping children stay connected to their world while they
are in hospital. The laptops and wireless access will enable
kids to do their homework, send and receive email, play video
games, watch DVDs and play music," says Bell Canada’s
Ellen Malcolmson Senior VP Customer Experience. "Our
goal is to provide a more ‘homelike’ stay while
they are in hospital recovering from illness or injury."
The children’s online safety will be protected by two
levels of parental control as well as Bell Canada’s
award winning internet security system.
This installation is one of the first of its kind in Canada.
Trillium’s unique “Guest Access” system
will provide patients with access to Sympatico without allowing
access to patient information. The Guest Wireless solution
has been designed to protect patient privacy and prevent unauthorized
access to our patient information systems by routing all guest
traffic away from our internal systems. This installation
will allow the children and parents in the paediatric unit
to have access to Sympatico on a network that is completely
separate from the Trillium network.
“Protecting the privacy of our patients and patient
records is paramount at Trillium. The “Guest”
wireless network is completely separate from the Trillium
network and as such, guests cannot gain access Trillium systems,”
says Sean Thompson THINK Infrastructure Lead.
