Trillium’s boldly designed new wing receives first patients today
First clinical units move into Trillium Health Centre - Mississauga’s innovative new inpatient wing
An important milestone for Trillium Health Centre was reached today as the first patients from the Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation units were officially welcomed to the new $100 million, 190-bed inpatient wing at Trillium's Mississauga location.
“Having the first patients receiving care in this impressive new wing is the realization of the hard work, dedication and vision of many people,” said Scott Campbell, chair, Trillium Health Centre Board of Directors. “Today is a day of celebration for which we must thank our community, our donors, and the provincial, regional and municipal governments for supporting our vision.”
Starting today, occupancy of the new wing will happen in phases. As existing units move into the new wing, the vacated spaces will be refreshed and units reorganized to better serve patients and improve work processes for staff.
Trillium President and CEO, Janet Davidson, O.C. is confident that the comprehensive research and inspiration that has gone into the design of this wing will make it an example to hospitals everywhere on how to improve the patient experience and outcomes through evidence-based design, innovative processes and leading-edge technology.
"We think we've set a new standard for patient room design. The new wing combines bright, healing spaces with a decentralized care environment and integrated communications technology," said Davidson. "From safety and environmental features to accessibility and staff mobility, the new wing showcases everything Trillium has learned about imaginative, evidence-based, cost-effective, patient-friendly design. We hope to inspire hospital planners and architects everywhere.”
The new wing at Trillium Health Centre – Mississauga features:
Innovative design and spaces:
- large windows for natural, healing light in every room
- enhanced privacy screens for patients in semi-private rooms
- more space for family and visitors
- barrier-free accessibility throughout the entire building
- washrooms with wheelchair accessible showers in every patient room
- ergonomically-designed infrastructure including convenient waist-height access to devices and equipment for staff
- healthy workplace environment for staff, physicians and volunteers
Decentralized care environment: care stations distributed around the floor bring staff closer to patients, reduce travel times, maximize mobility of clinical and non-clinical teams, and increase nursing time at the bedside with patients.
Communications and information technology enablers: wireless networks and integrated communications infrastructure support mobility and the decentralization of staff and allow instant information sharing among care providers.
Advanced patient safety and infection prevention features: 50 percent private patient rooms; handwashing sinks for staff and visitors in every room; seamless surfaces, mold-resistant building materials and bacteria-resistant countertops to facilitate cleaning.
Environmentally-conscious building design: energy efficient windows and lighting fixtures; radiant ceiling heat.
“Trillium has a tradition of striving for innovation in every project, with a particular interest in creating people places,” said Susan Black, principal architect of Perkins Eastman Black Architects, and designer (in joint venture with Parkin Architects) of the new inpatient wing. “The new wing has been designed with a view to the future, incorporating the latest in design research trends and technology from all over the world.”
“Opening the new wing is part of a total redevelopment and reorganization of Trillium’s Mississauga location,” said Davidson. “Our plan is to move existing beds and resources into the new wing in phases, and then to open new beds gradually over the next few years as operating funding from the government is confirmed.”
“This is an exciting day for everyone at Trillium Health Centre,” said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “By expanding this facility, the Ontario government is helping ensure people in this community have increased access to high-quality health care in an innovative, patient-friendly environment.”
“The redevelopment and expansion of Trillium Health Centre is important to everyone in our community and across the region,” said Charles Sousa, MPP Mississauga South. “Thanks to the ongoing partnership between the Ontario government and our community partners, Trillium's projects have been completed on time and on budget and we should be very proud of that.”
Trillium Health Centre will host an Official Opening and Community Celebration for the new wing in May.
