Hospitals reach out to the community using new telephone town hall technology – and over 10,000 join in!

The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre hold community conference call to get input into proposed merger

MISSISSAUGA/WEST TORONTO, ON – On April 7, the Boards of Directors of The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre today announced their intent to merge the two hospitals, contingent on the outcomes of due diligence which will include extensive community consultation.

As part of the community consultation process, the hospitals tried something new – a telephone town hall.  People could sign up to take part in the community-wide conference call, but the hospitals also reached out and called 30,000 residents randomly to invite them to participate – and 10,700 did.

“We believe we are the first hospitals to try this new technology,” said Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO, The Credit Valley Hospital. “It’s an exciting, innovative way to talk to – and more importantly, hear from - so many people at one time.”

DiEmanuele was joined on the telephone town hall by Scott McLeod, Vice-President, Strategy and Business Transformation, Trillium Health Centre and Kathryn Hayward-Murray, Vice President, Strategy, Quality & Organizational Performance/Chief Nursing Executive, The Credit Valley Hospital.

The hospitals held six community forums as well as open forums and focus groups with their internal stakeholders to engage staff, physicians, volunteers and donors in the process.

Consultations have been held with external stakeholders including healthcare providers, service providers, government representatives, long-term care facilities, and representatives from the community including Chinese, Francophone, Polish and South Asian residents.

“We would like to thank all the people from Mississauga and West Toronto who took the time to participate in our community forums and focus groups or share their views by email, phone, blog or comment cards,” said Janet Davidson, President and CEO, Trillium Health Centre. “We are encouraged by the positive response and the depth of the questions – the level of engagement was inspiring.”

The excitement the hospitals feel about the proposed merger was strongly reinforced by the consultation process. The people of the Mississauga and West Toronto communities made it very clear that they want to be involved and to have a say in the future of health care.

Trillium and Credit Valley will continue to offer opportunities for public input into the proposed merger, so that, if the voluntary merger proceeds, the new organization will meet the needs of the entire community.

The Boards of Directors of the two organizations will now submit a report on the consultation process to the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) for its consideration in its review of the proposed merger.

Credit Valley and Trillium still hope to hear from anyone with views or ideas on the proposed merger.  Call 905-848-7593 or email info@partneringforpatients.ca to offer your input.
