The WNTD Symposium is the kick off of a new Trillium-led multidisciplinary initiative, the Smoking Cessation Collaborative of Peel-Halton, which is an integrated approach to fighting smoking addiction involving partners including public health, pharmacists, family physicians and hospitals.

This innovative program is based on evidence that smokers are most motivated to quit when they are sick in the hospital with an acute illness. Helping patients quit during this vulnerable time is the best way to offer them the support they need to change their behaviour.

Patients receive counseling and smoking cessation drugs while they are in hospital, then transition to community supports including counseling, pharmaco-therapy and automated follow-up phone calls after their discharge from hospital.
