Diwali 2009 shines a light on Seniors Health & Wellness

Community strongly supports Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s 8th annual ‘Festival of Lights’ fundraiser

MISSISSAUGA / WEST TORONTO, ON – More than 850 persons will gather tonight to celebrate Diwali and shine a light on Seniors Health & Wellness at Trillium Health Centre.

This is the eighth Diwali ‘Festival of Lights’ fundraiser for Trillium which serves Mississauga and West Toronto, home to one of the fastest-growing communities of seniors in the province. The number of seniors here is expected to double by 2026.

“Even today, while seniors represent only 40 per cent of patients at Trillium they account for more than 60 per cent of patient days,” says Anne Sado, Chair, Trillium Health Centre Board of Directors. “We want to be ready to meet this increasing level of need so we’re very excited that the Diwali Fundraiser will play a key role in supporting our plans to enhance and expand our capacity to provide for Seniors Health & Wellness.”

In previous years, Diwali, the largest celebration of its kind in Canada, supported the development of a state-of-the-art OM Fracture Clinic, raising over $2.3 million in the first seven years.

Now Diwali is focused on helping Trillium bring to life its vision of a seniors-friendly organization that will help older patients achieve greater health and independence by providing complex care close to home.
The recent opening of the new inpatient wing at the Trillium-Mississauga location is proving that our vision of imaginative, patient-friendly design delivers a better experience for patients and their families. Now we need to refresh the existing spaces to provide truly inspired health care to seniors.
We are creating a more accessible, comfortable environment to deliver the best possible care to our diverse, growing seniors population. This includes introducing wireless devices to connect patients directly to nurses, widening doors to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers, and purchasing specialized equipment like lifts and handrails to enhance the high quality care and comfort of our elderly patients currently receive.
Diwali 2009 co-chairs are Dr. Gopal Bhatnagar, Chief-of-Staff, Trillium Health Centre and Anil Shah, President, Ni-Met Metals & Minerals Inc.

“Diwali is all about giving – to our family, our friends, our community. Our seniors deserve that we honour and care for them by providing health care in an environment that preserves their dignity and independence and ensures their physical, emotional, and spiritual comfort and well being,” says Dr. Bhatnagar.

“Trillium’s vision is bold and ambitious,” says Kim Warburton, Chair of the Trillium Health Centre Foundation Board of Directors.  “We are building a seniors-friendly, community-based health care organization that will help our aging population achieve a better quality of life.  The degree to which we succeed will be due, in no small part to the unwavering commitment and extraordinary generosity of our Diwali organizers, our communities and our sponsors.”
