Trillium’s Diwali Fundraiser sparkles for Seniors Health & Wellness!

8th annual gala raises over $530,000 for Trillium Health Centre

MISSISSAUGA / WEST TORONTO, ON –Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s 2009 Diwali Fundraiser drew over 850 guests to Pearson Convention Center on Friday, October 2, for an electrifying night of South Asian music, food and dancing.  This year, Trillium’s 8th annual South Asian ‘Festival of Lights’ gala had a new focus: raising funds for facilities and equipment to support seniors health and wellness services at both hospital locations.

Among the VIPs and distinguished guests were Consuls General of India and Sri Lanka, Mayor Hazel McCallion adorned in her colourful saree and several MPPs. ‘RDB’ (Rhythm Dhol Bass) featuring Nindy Kaur put their raw, urban twist on ‘Bhangra’ in a riveting performance blending Punjabi and Bollywood sounds with American Hip Hop.

Co-Chairs Dr. Gopal Bhatnagar, chief of staff at Trillium Health Centre, and Anil Shah, president of Ni-Met Metals and Minerals Inc., thanked the generous participants from the community who filled the glittering ballroom. One anonymous donor chose to give $20,000 on the spot – a surprise that brought the total raised to over $530,000.

Speaking for the Health Centre, Dr. Bhatnagar put the turbulent economy in perspective in an eloquent reminder of the cause behind the event.

“To the child with cancer, the middle-aged man in cardiac arrest, or the senior felled by a broken hip, it doesn’t matter whether the TSX has gone up or down,” he said. “What matters is getting the quality health care they need and deserve.”

Trillium Health Centre Foundation thanks all who participated in the 8th annual Diwali Fundraiser 2009 and all the generous sponsors - Event Sponsor: Canada India Foundation (CIF); Gold Sponsors: Fagen, The Host - Fine Indian Cuisine and IAMGOLD Corporation; Silver Sponsor: AstraZeneca Canada Inc.; Bronze Sponsors: Medtronic of Canada Ltd., Pharmascience Inc., Rogers Communications Inc. and Willson International Limited.

Other major cash donors included Dilawri Group of Companies, Feerasta Family, Pushminder and Jaswinder Judge, Maharajah Charity Golf Tournament, Ruparell Family and Ni-Met Metals & Minerals Inc.
