Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s Festival of Lights celebration honours seniors and offers the community a chance to make a difference for the future

Sold out Trillium Diwali 2011 fundraiser set to shed a light on Endoscopy Services at Trillium on October 14

MISSISSAUGA / WEST TORONTO, ON (October 7, 2011) – Trillium Diwali 2011, the largest celebration of its kind in Canada, is raising funds to support the major revitalization of the Endoscopy Suites at Trillium Health Centre, as well as the purchase of life-saving endoscopy equipment that will positively impact patients.

This year’s event, which will take place on October 14, is Trillium Health Centre Foundation’s 10th annual Diwali celebration. Tickets and corporate tables are sold out, but community members can still get into the spirit of Diwali by making a donation to support Trillium Diwali 2011 in honour of a beloved senior in their life.

“Diwali is about honouring your loved ones, particular seniors,” said Nimmi Papneja, Community Chair for Trillium Diwali 2011. “Although tickets for Trillium Diwali are sold out, the need to revitalize Trillium’s Endoscopy Suites remains more important than ever. We encourage everyone to donate in support of this life-saving program.”

To date, Trillium Diwali has raised more than $4.4 million for important projects like the Capital Campaign and the OM Fracture Clinic. In 2010, Trillium Diwali raised $650,000 towards the $2 million endoscopy redevelopment program.

Trillium Diwali 2011 will take place on Friday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the International Centre, 6900 Airport Road in Mississauga.

As part of its mission to be a leader in specialized care for seniors, Trillium continues to develop its programs and services to better meet the needs of our aging population.
The average age of endoscopy patients is 61 and as the community ages Trillium’s endoscopy needs increase.

There is a growing need for enhanced endoscopy services, which allow physicians to look inside the body with miniature cameras attached to long tubes. Digestive diseases, as a group, represent the most common reasons for patients seeking medical care and requiring hospitalization. Endoscopy is used to treat and prevent digestive diseases such as colon cancer, stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, jaundice, pancreatic cancer, and Crohn’s and colitis. Endoscopy is also a major tool for the diagnosis and treatment for respiratory diseases, including lung cancer, tuberculosis and pneumonia.

The existing Endoscopy Suites at Trillium are booked to capacity and the wait for diagnosis or treatment can be as long as three months. The facilities need to be renovated and the existing equipment needs to be replaced and upgraded to meet ever-increasing demand.

“We are so grateful that the funds raised for Trillium Diwali are going towards our endoscopy services and the patients we treat and diagnose,” said Dr. William McMullen, Chief of Endoscopy at Trillium Health Centre. “Today’s seniors are living longer and, as a result, are living with multiple, chronic conditions that need complex care. We can work wonders with these miniature digital cameras, but we need your help.”

The goal for Trillium Diwali is to reach the $2 million needed for this revitalization. To date, almost $1 million has been raised, so further community support will help the Foundation get even closer to its goal.

“We’re proud to celebrate Trillium Diwali’s 10th anniversary this year in support of the Endoscopy Suites,” said Steve Hoscheit, president and CEO of Trillium Health Centre Foundation. “The community’s support for this year’s event has been incredible. All our corporate tables and tickets were sold out in July, and we’ve had outstanding support from all our sponsors and donors of items for our silent auction.”
