Cardiac Catheterization
Trillium Health Centre - Mississauga

Cardiac catheterization measures the function of the chambers of the heart valves, and coronary artery blood flow. It identifies blockages or narrowing of the arteries caused by a build up of plaque or fat. During the procedure, a catheter is inserted into an artery or vein and guided to the heart. If a blockage is identified, treatment includes medication, angioplasty, coronary artery bypass surgery, or other interventional techniques.

Cardiac catheterization

This procedure usually takes approximately one hour and is performed in one of Trillium's two cardiac catheterization laboratories specifically designed for these procedures. The rooms feature special tables, X-ray machines, television screens, and state-of-the-art cardiac monitoring and diagnostic equipment. Following a short recovery period in the recovery unit, patients are discharged on the same day.

Trillium performs over 3,600 cardiac catheterizations a year – the 4th greatest volume in Ontario after only three years in operation.
