Pacemaker Program
Trillium Health
Centre - Mississauga
A pacemaker is needed when a person's heartbeat is irregular
and the heart's natural "battery" is not working
properly. It helps a person's heart to continue beating. A
person with this condition may experience irregular heartbeats,
chest pains, shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness,
weakness, blurred vision or fainting.
During this outpatient procedure, a pacemaker is surgically
implanted into a person's chest. The procedure takes approximately
one hour to three hours to complete, depending on the type
of implant the person requires.
Trillium's Pacemaker Clinic consists of physicians, nurses
and technicians all experts in managing heart beat irregularities,
and provides patients with assessment and teaching. It also
provides patients with permanent pacemakers with regular follow-up
testing of their device to measure rate, function, and battery
life.
