Your First Visit

Our staff and volunteers are here to help you navigate through your first visit the process as easily as possible.

Here are some questions and answers to help you on your first visit.

Your First Appointment: Questions and Answers

Q: When will I be called for an appointment?

Wait times for appointment will vary but usually you will be contacted for an appointment 2-3 weeks after meeting with your referring physician.

Q: What should I bring?
  • Your Ontario Health Insurance Card
  • All medications you are currently taking.  This includes all prescription and non-prescription medications including vitamins and/or over the counter medications.
  • The name and phone number of the community pharmacy that you use.
  • One or two family members or friends
  • Pen and paper to keep notes
  • A list of questions or concerns you have for the oncologist or oncology nurse.
Q: What will happen?

At the reception desk in the Oncology Clinic you will be asked for your Ontario Health Insurance Card.  You will also be asked a number of questions to ensure your contact information is correct on our records.  We will give you forms to complete before you meet with your oncology team.

At the first appointment you will meet your oncologist as well as an oncology nurse.  At future appointments you may also meet the pharmacist, dietitian and social worker.   The oncologist and oncology nurse will take your history, perform a physical examination then discuss your treatment options.  You will not receive cancer treatment at this first visit.

Q: How soon will I begin treatments?

If you require cancer drugs you will receive this treatment at the clinic during future appointments.  If radiation is required, an appointment will be scheduled for you to see a radiation oncologist at the oncology clinic at a future appointment.  Most radiation is planned and given at Credit Valley Hospital.  Participation in a clinical trial may also be offered to you as a treatment option.

Q: Can I bring someone with me?

We encourage you to bring one to two family members or friends.
