Custom Knee Braces

What are Knee Braces?

Knee braces are usually used for minor or major knee injuries. These can be custom fitted or off-the-shelf knee braces.

Custom Braces

To make a custom brace, a mould of your leg or measurements is needed to fit the brace.  The mould is sent to the manufacturer to be made and then fitted by our own trained Registered Orthopaedic Technologist.

If you decide to purchase a custom brace, you will need to return to the Fracture Clinic twice.  At your first visit, your needs will be assessed to determine what brace is best for you. Depending on the type of brace chosen, we may need to make a mould of your knee. It will take about 7-10 days for delivery of your custom knee brace.

On your second visit to the clinic, your brace will be fitted. We will give you instructions on how best to maintain and care for your brace.

Off-the-Shelf Knee Braces

Off-the-Shelf Braces are ready to wear and require minimal measurement.  They are fitted by our own trained expert technicians.

Can Osteo-arthritis be treated with a knee brace?

Yes! Osteo-arthritis can be treated with a brace in younger patients. The brace is designed to decrease the amount of pressure on the damaged or diseased side of your knee. This will help reduce your knee joint pain. These braces can only be prescribed by an orthopaedic surgeon.

Does OHIP cover knee braces?

OHIP does not cover knee braces, but they may be covered by your private insurance or extended health care plan.

As all custom braces are made to fit only you, we require a deposit to be made at your first visit.  Full payment of your brace is due on your second visit.   It is helpful to contact your insurer before your first visit, to ask about your insurance coverage.
