Viscosupplementation
Program
What is Viscosupplementation?
Viscosupplementation
is a relatively new treatment in Canada for people with osteoarthritis
of the knee (or other synovial joints). A clear gel-like
substance (hyaluronic acid) is injected into the knee that
helps the joint fluid regain its natural properties. This
treatment may reduce pain and stiffness in the treated joints
for easier, more comfortable movement.
What is Suplasyn®?
Suplasyn® is
a highly purified form of hyaluronic acid developed for visco-supplementation
therapy. Suplasyn® is naturally made from biological substances
and developed according to specific standards (please see
Suplasyn® brochure for additional information).
Who is a good candidate for Suplasyn®?
Suplasyn® therapy
is particularly useful for patients in relatively early stages
of osteoarthritis, where physical damage has not progressed
very far. It can also be used as an alternative or supplement
to therapy with NSAIDs or other medications that are commonly
prescribed for patients suffering from arthritis.
What are some of the advantages of Suplasyn®?
Suplasyn® relieves
pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis. Yet, because
it works only locally within the joint, it has none of the
gastrointestinal side effects associated with NSAIDs or analgesics.
Does OHIP Cover Suplasyn®?
Suplasyn® is
not covered by OHIP, but may be covered by your private insurance
or extended health care plan.
Is Suplasyn Therapy
Painful?
No. There may be
some mild and short-lasting discomfort during the actual procedure,
but Suplasyn® treatment is generally relatively painless.
Other things to
consider:
- Suplasyn® can be purchased from the orthopaedic clinic
- Suplasyn® should be stored at room temperature
- A Suplasyn® treatment consists of three syringes,
each containing 2mls of Suplasyn®
- The visits will be weekly for 3-4 weeks (depending on
the first visit) with an injection each week
- Your Orthopaedic Surgeon will give the injection of Suplasyn®
at each visit
- You will need to limit your activity for the first 24
hours after the injection
- If necessary, apply ice for five minutes twice per hour
- If you have any questions about your visit to the Orthopaedic
Clinic, please call us. We will be happy to help you.
