Joint Injections
for Arthritis
What is a joint
injection for arthritis?
If you have osteoarthritis,
your doctor may choose to inject your arthritic joint with
an anti-inflammatory medication called Depo-Medrol®. The
injection you receive usually helps to temporarily reduce
your pain. It is in not a cure for arthritis.
What is Depo-Medrol®?
Depo-Medrol®
is the anti-inflammatory medication that the doctor uses to
inject your arthritic joint. Depo-Medrol® is a form of
cortisone that has a strong and long- lasting anti-inflammatory
response. This inflammatory response is what aids in reducing
your pain. When injected into a joint Depo-Medrol® has
no systemic effects, but rather only a local effect on the
joint involved, and is considered safe.
Who is Depo-Medrol® for?
Because Depo-Medrol®
only has temporary effects, it is particularly useful for
patients who are suffering from a flare up of arthritis. Depo-Medrol®
joint injections are only part of your arthritis treatment
plan. Other treatments and medications should be discussed
with your doctor.
What are some of the advantages
of Depo-Medrol®?
Depo-Medrol®
reduces inflammation which is associated with the pain and
stiffness of osteoarthritis. Because it is injected right
into the affected joint it works quite quickly and has no
gastrointestinal side effects.
Does OHIP Cover
Depo-Medrol®?
Depo-Medrol® is
not covered by OHIP, but the medication may be covered by
your private insurance or extended health care plan.
Are
Depo-Medrol® injections painful?
There may be some mild and short-lasting discomfort during
the actual procedure. Sometimes pain can persist for longer.
If this is the case, take Tylenol or ASA as directed, and/or
apply an ice pack to the injection site.
