Health Care Professionals - Emergency Health System
Occupational Therapy services are provided to two Emergency-based
programs at Trillium Health Centre – the Quick Response
Program (QRP) and the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU).
In the Quick Response Program, patients present with any
variety of health issues or problems. Occupational Therapy
is called upon on an as needed basis to provide a comprehensive,
functional assessment of an individual’s ability to
manage at home. The assessment may include ADL function,
mobility, cognitive function or homemaking/social issues.
The Occupational Therapist may provide the patient/family
with information on appropriate assistive equipment, information
on community services/supports, education regarding managing
their illnesses at home and guidelines regarding safety at
home. The Occupational Therapist works closely with the Physiotherapist
and the Discharge Planner to intervene with these patients
who may only need some education and information regarding
community supports, not necessarily an admission to the acute
care hospital.
The role of the Occupational Therapist and the types of
patients seen on the Clinical Decision Unit are similar to
that seen in the QRP program. However, patients on CDU are
held in hospital for up to 72 hours for the purpose of conducting
medical tests or diagnostic procedures. Occupational Therapy
works closely with the Physiotherapist and the Discharge
Planner in this Emergency-based unit, assisting patients
and families towards a safe and expeditious discharge.
