Health Care Professionals - Surgical Health System
Occupational Therapists provide service to the two general
surgical units where patients present with a wide variety
of surgical procedures, some of which interfere with a patient’s
ability to manage their activities of daily living. (The
specialized Cardiovascular, Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical
units are not included in the ‘General Surgery’ group).
The Occupational Therapist provides comprehensive assessment
of a patient’s occupational performance areas including
personal care, work and leisure. Practising within a client-centred
approach, interventions are provided to:
- address the identified
deficit areas and assist the patient to maximize functional
independence or achieve their occupational
performance goals
- educate patients, families and staff regarding
a patient’s
abilities, limitations and care needs
- assist in the discharge process by providing information
on assistive equipment, community supports and services
and safety at home.
Occupational Therapy also provides ADL oximetry assessment
for those patients who may require supplemental oxygen at
home. This assessment of oxygen saturation levels during
activity is complemented by a teaching component wherein
relaxation and energy conservation/work simplification principles
are discussed.
On the surgical units, the Occupational Therapist functions
within a multidisciplinary team, discussing assessment, treatment
and discharge goals/recommendations so that a comprehensive
approach to patient care is provided.
