System
Specialized Occupational Therapy services are provided
in two outpatient paediatric programs at Trillium Health
Centre.
Paediatric
Outpatient Services (P.O.P.S)
The POPS program offers a multidisciplinary (Occupational
Therapy, Speech Language Pathology and Psychology) assessment,
treatment and placement coordination for both diagnosed and
undiagnosed children. Specific types of children seen include
those with general developmental delays, global developmental
delays, children with syndromes, children with learning difficulties
and children with PDD or Autism. Children must be between
the ages of 2 and 5 years and require service from at least
two disciplines at the time of the referral.
The role of the Occupational Therapist includes assessment
and treatment of sensory processing skills, gross motor skills
and fine motor skills. The Occupational Therapist works in
conjunction with the child, family, other service providers
and other POPS team members to optimize development in all
areas.
Peel Infant Development
The Peel Infant Development program focuses on children
from birth to three years of age who have a developmental
delay or who risk delayed development for established, biological
and/or psychosocial reasons.
Occupational Therapists, in collaboration with other service
providers, provide an integrated transdisciplinary approach
which aims to provide the highest level of opportunity for
the optimal development of the child and family unit. This
home-based intervention service is parent-led and responsive
to parent strengths, competencies and priorities. Some of
the many services provided are: direct early intervention
in all dvelopmental domains (gross and fine motor, social
and emotional, language and cognitive); play-based therapeutic
intervention program plan; support to enhance parenting skills
and parental competence; intervention to promote positive
parent-infant interactions.
Referrals to the program are accepted from parents, physicians
and community workers.
