2. My doctor told me I was high risk. What should I do?

The Special Pregnancy Clinic and Neonatal Consultation Clinic offers care for you and your baby.  If this service is needed, your doctor will talk to you about seeing our high risk specialist. We have partnered with Mount Sinai (hospital that specializes in high risk pregnancy) to provide you with this service closer to home.  Our special pregnancy clinics are held at Trillium in the Family Care Centre at our Mississauga location.

4. Can I have a vaginal birth this time if my last baby was born by a caesarean section?

Yes you can attempt a vaginal birth after caesarean section if you have had only one caesarean section.

A referral to the VBAC Clinic (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean Clinic) will be considered by your doctor or midwife based on the following criteria:

  • Two years since your last birth
  • Previous birth records are available

If after discussion with your doctor or midwife, you choose to have a VBAC please contact the Prenatal Service Department to book a VBAC Clinic appointment. This appointment will also include your Prenatal Registration.

The VBAC sessions are held once every two months on Wednesday mornings.

The purpose of the VBAC session is to provide you with the tools necessary to make an informed decision about trialing labour.

Please be prepared to stay for approximately 4 hours. To reduce the number of visits, we hold these as group sessions. We are unable to accommodate children.

Remember to bring with you:
  • Health Card
  • Health insurance coverage
  • The Prenatal Package with the COMPLETED registration forms

5. What if I’m not a Canadian citizen with no health insurance (OHIP)?

If you do not have OHIP, there is a fee required for services. You can contact a Community Health Centre (CHC) to help with getting health care for you and your baby. The CHC will contact Trillium to arrange a doctor for the birth of your baby. Once you have been assigned a doctor, you will be requested to set a meeting with Trillium’s finance department. There are two separate fees you are required to pay: the first is for the hospital stay and the second is to be paid to the doctor caring for you (the doctor will discuss this with you).

7. What is a Non-Stress Test (NST)?

An NST is used to monitor your baby’s movements while you are pregnant. The nurse will place a monitor onto your abdomen to assess the baby’s heartbeat and will check to see if you are having any contractions. Your doctor will talk to you about whether or not you need to have NST’s scheduled. NST’s may be delayed if the unit is extremely busy. Examples of when an NST may be scheduled are in cases of twins or multiples, placenta previa, high blood pressure, mothers who are diabetic, or who have had a previous stillbirth. An NST will take at least 20 minutes once you have been placed on the monitor, but sometimes it may take longer based on the information we are looking for.

8. What if I want to collect umbilical cord blood?

Some parents choose to have their baby’s umbilical cord blood collected at the time of birth to be stored for future use. You will need to pre-register with a company that collects umbilical cord blood ahead of time. If you decide at the last minute to have this procedure done, extra packages are available. *This procedure is not covered by OHIP.  Trillium charges an additional fee of $100.00 for preparation and collection.
