Volunteering
Opportunities
Make a difference in the life of a patient today! Whether you want to work directly with patients or indirectly to support their care at Trillium Health Centre, we have a wide variety of opportunities at both our West Toronto and Mississauga locations to choose from.
Shifts range in times but on average they are Monday – Sunday divided into morning, afternoon, evening and late shifts ranging from 3 – 4 hours. The minimum commitment for most roles is 50 hours or six months but of course once you join our amazing volunteer team you will never want to leave!
Patient Support – Nursing Units
Working directly with the patients on the units, these volunteers provide frontline support ranging from friendly visiting, recreation therapy, fluid repletion, meal-time assistance, Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) (link to other page about program), Pet Therapy and our Silver Spoon feeding program.
Applicants must have a high level of empathy, compassion and a comfort working with patients in a hospital environment
Clinical Support
Our hospital clinics are fast paced environments that treat thousands of patients every year. As a volunteer in these areas you will have direct patient and family member interaction. The following list is just sample of the areas where volunteer opportunities exist:
- Emergency Centre
- Urgent Care Centre (Trillium-West Toronto)
- Fracture Clinic
- Critical Care Family Support and Coronary Care Waiting Room
- Oncology Clinic (Trillium-West Toronto)
Each area offers a unique role but overall applicants for these areas should be mature, customer service oriented, good with thinking on their feet, diplomatic and able to take initiative. In many case volunteers will act as a liaison between staff and family members, therefore the ability to act in a professional and confidential manner is a must.
Information and Hospitality
First impressions set the tone for visitors and patients who walk through the doors at Trillium Health Centre. Being able to ensure they get to where they need to be or find their loved one with ease is top priority. In addition to helping people find their way, discharge of patients is supported throughout the week from units and day surgery areas by a dedicated team. From start to finish, customer service is delivered with a smile. The following areas are supported by volunteers:
- Information Desk
- Way-finding/Hospitality
- Patient Transportation
Applicants must be approachable, physically able to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time, have a courteous and pleasant manner. Being bilingual or multilingual is helpful but not necessary.
Administrative Support
Behind the scenes there are roles for those who excel in data entry, filing and special projects. Supporting numerous departments across both sites, volunteers provide much needed assistance with daily tasks.
Computer savvy is a must as well as being articulate, organized and having a pleasant manner, both on the phone and in person.

Foreign Trained Medical Professionals
Each year, Volunteer Resources receives many volunteer applications from foreign trained professionals. While we are pleased to accept your application, volunteers at Trillium Health Centre are not permitted to take on any tasks or responsibilities that fall outside the scope of the volunteer role. Any tasks or responsibilities that only a member of a licensed or regulated profession (physician, pharmacist, physiotherapist, laboratory technician, etc.) can legally perform are not included in any volunteer role descriptions.
Volunteering will not allow you the opportunity to practice or develop your clinical or technical skills, nor are our volunteer roles designed to be professional internship opportunities. Also, for reasons of patient privacy, Trillium Health Centre does not permit volunteers to shadow physicians or other health care professionals.
